Titagarh Naval Systems Limited has received in-principle approval from the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways for a brownfield expansion at Falta under the Government of India's Shipbuilding Development Scheme. The approval covers a project to expand shipbuilding capacity and maritime manufacturing infrastructure in West Bengal and follows regulatory review by national authorities.

The approval aligns with national measures to promote domestic shipbuilding through the Shipbuilding Financial Assistance Scheme and the Shipbuilding Development Scheme and complements recent Union Budget priorities that emphasise strategic manufacturing. These policies are designed to strengthen infrastructure, support defence and commercial vessel construction and position Indian shipyards to compete on a global stage.

The project received clearance based on recommendations of the third Inter-Ministerial Governing Board of the National Shipbuilding Mission, reflecting inter-ministerial support for world-class shipbuilding infrastructure. The total project cost will be approximately Rs 6.1 billion (bn) and the Government will extend capital assistance of around Rs 1.29 billion (bn) towards eligible plant and machinery, subject to compliance with applicable scheme guidelines.

Titagarh said the expansion will upgrade infrastructure and technological capabilities to cater to defence, commercial and export-oriented requirements while reinforcing West Bengal as an emerging hub for advanced maritime manufacturing. The company noted that the board has in principle approved the transfer of shipbuilding and maritime systems business into a wholly owned subsidiary, Titagarh Naval Systems Limited, with an order book above Rs five billion (bn). The new facility is designed to handle ships up to 180 metres in length and to target an annual capacity of 12 to 16 vessels, building on a legacy of more than 35 delivered vessels and continuing projects such as the Diving Support Craft. Management expressed gratitude to government agencies and described the approval as an endorsement of the company's long-term commitment to Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat and to contributing to national security and export growth.
