The six-month extension granted to urban local bodies (ULBs) in Uttarakhand had expired on June 1. With elections yet to be held, the tenure of appointed administrators was extended for three more months.

The original terms of the urban local body boards had ended on December 1, 2023. However, the upcoming Lok Sabha elections led to the postponement of new polls, resulting in the appointment of district magistrates as administrators for a six-month period.

Due to the implementation of the model code of conduct in the state, there were anticipated delays in the election process for ULBs. In light of this, the tenure of the administrators was being extended for another three months or until the formation of the ULB boards, whichever occurred first, as stated in a notice from RK Sudhanshu, principal secretary of the urban development department.

The extension had received approval from the governor. Elections for ULBs, which include nine municipal corporations, 41 municipalities, and 45 nagar panchayats, were expected to take place soon. Voter lists were being prepared, and political parties were preparing for the elections. Recommendations for reservations by the OBC survey for 95 ULBs had also been made. The previous ULB elections in the state were held in November 2018.
