Vice President Dhankhar Resigns; Polls Soon

The Ministry of Home Affairs, via Gazette Notification S.O.3354(E) dated 22 July 2025, has formally notified the resignation of Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar from the post of Vice President of India.

As per Article 324 of the Constitution, the Election Commission of India (ECI) is mandated to conduct the election to the office of the Vice President. The process is governed by the Presidential and Vice-Presidential Elections Act, 1952, and the corresponding rules of 1974.

The ECI has already begun preparatory work for the upcoming Vice-Presidential election. The official election schedule will be announced following the completion of these initial procedures.

Key activities underway include the preparation of the Electoral College—comprising elected and nominated members of both Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha—appointment of the Returning and Assistant Returning Officers, and compilation of background material on past Vice-Presidential elections.
