Volvo Buses has introduced a new long-range electric coach chassis based on its 600-volt BZR Electric platform, offering a battery capacity of up to 720 kWh and a driving range of up to 700 kilometres, setting a new benchmark for intercity electric buses.

Building on the success of its 8900 Electric intercity bus launched 18 months ago, Volvo has developed a longer-range model for the coach segment. The new chassis can accommodate eight 90-kWh battery packs, up from six in the previous model, allowing a total capacity of 720 kWh.

The BZR Electric platform uses batteries from Volvo Trucks, each weighing 535 kg with NCA chemistry. This system supports 4×2 or 6×2 axle configurations, coach lengths ranging from 9.5 to 14.9 metres, and a gross vehicle weight of up to 27.2 tonnes. The drive system remains available at 200 or 400 kW, with flexible battery configurations from 360 to 720 kWh.

Charging options include up to 250 kW DC via cable or 450 kW DC via OppCharge, providing operational versatility for long interregional routes with fewer stops. The chassis has achieved a 700-kilometre range in the SORT 3 test cycle, making it suitable for long-distance electric coach operations.

Volvo highlights that the chassis will be compatible with bodies from multiple bodybuilders depending on market requirements. The first model has been bodied by Carrus Delta and is intended for customers in the Nordic and Benelux markets. Additionally, the Volvo BZR Electric CD variant offers a 6×4 axle configuration with the same 720-kWh battery and lengths of 13.3, 14.0, or 14.9 metres.

“This electric coach chassis delivers longer journeys with fewer charging stops, enabling routes previously not feasible for electric coaches,” Volvo said, describing the 720-kWh battery capacity as industry-leading.
