West Bengal to Develop Mayapur as Global Religious Destination

The West Bengal government plans to develop Mayapur in Nadia district as an international-standard religious and tourist destination. The town, which houses the headquarters of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), is expected to receive upgraded infrastructure under the proposed development plan. The initiative is intended to improve facilities for pilgrims and tourists visiting the area.

According to sources in the Urban Development Department, the project will cover around 2,100 bighas of land near the ISKCON temple. The proposed area will be developed with a focus on religious tourism and supporting urban infrastructure. The plan places the temple and its surrounding area at the centre of the state government’s development efforts in Mayapur.

Urban Development Minister Agnimitra Paul recently visited the temple and held discussions with government officials and ISKCON representatives. The meeting examined the proposed development plan and the infrastructure requirements for the town. It also brought together the state authorities and the organisation associated with Mayapur’s religious activities and visitor facilities.

The planned improvements include better roads and public transport to support movement within the area. The project will also provide improved waste management, enhanced lighting and modern facilities for pilgrims and tourists. These measures are intended to address basic public infrastructure needs while improving the experience of visitors to the religious centre.

The state government is also planning to bring nearby Nabadwip under the Smart City project. The proposed initiative would support the development of modern urban infrastructure in the area. Together, the Mayapur development plan and the Smart City proposal for Nabadwip are expected to shape the government’s broader approach to improving facilities in the religious and tourist belt.
