Wienerberger GmbH has been working closely with Liebherr and its local sales and service partner, Nagel, for more than four decades, building a partnership rooted in trust, reliable performance and continuous technological advancement.

The collaboration began in 1984 with the purchase of Wienerberger’s first Liebherr R 932 crawler excavator and L 541 wheel loader. Since then, Liebherr machines have played a central role in the company’s raw material extraction operations. Roland Kanefzky, Manager of the three loam and clay pits at the Wertingen site in Germany, said the consistent development of the machines, combined with dependable service support from Liebherr and Nagel, has ensured long-term satisfaction and operational confidence.

At Wertingen, Liebherr earthmoving equipment is critical to loam and clay extraction under demanding conditions. Quarrying activity is restricted to drier months due to moisture limits on raw materials, resulting in intense operations between March and November. During this period, machines must deliver maximum availability, precision and output to meet production targets without downtime.

The Liebherr R 966 Litronic crawler excavator, manufactured in Colmar, is deployed directly in material extraction. With an operating weight of nearly 78 tonnes, it offers high penetration force, strong stability and fuel consumption of around 40 litres per hour. Truck loading is handled by L 586 XPower and L 550 XPower wheel loaders, produced in Bischofshofen, Austria, which combine hydrostatic and mechanical drives for optimal efficiency and low fuel use. The fleet is complemented by the PR 746 Litronic crawler dozer, delivering 258 horsepower and supporting grading and site preparation with high precision and durability.

Wienerberger GmbH traces its roots in Wertingen, Bavaria, to 1884, evolving over more than a century into a leading European producer of clay bricks. The company emerged in its modern form following the merger of Berchtold and Ott in 1992, blending traditional craftsmanship with industrial innovation.

In 2021, the business became part of the Terreal Group, marking a strategic shift towards sustainability and innovation. This transition was further strengthened in March 2024, when Wienerberger Group completed the acquisition of Terreal and Creaton, the largest takeover in its history. Today, Wienerberger employs around 1,800 people across 21 production sites in Germany, offering a broad portfolio of clay bricks, concrete roof tiles and roofing solutions, while maintaining strong regional identities and a clear focus on sustainable construction.
