Hindustan Zinc, the world’s largest integrated zinc producer, is driving one of India’s most ambitious animal welfare and biodiversity initiatives. Since 2016, its interventions have positively impacted over 8.7 lakh animals through health camps, rescue operations, and ‘One Health’ care.  

A key initiative is the Rs 5 crore MoU with the Udaipur Forest Department to develop the Baghdarra Crocodile Conservation Reserve. The project focuses on restoring crocodile habitats through afforestation of 5,000 saplings, water conservation structures, and eco-trails, benefiting more than 200 species. Community-led eco-tourism facilities are also being developed to provide sustainable livelihood opportunities.   

Hindustan Zinc has also created a Peacock Conservation Park at its Kayad Mine and endangered species nurseries at Kayad and Rampura Agucha mines. Additional biodiversity initiatives include bird nesting stations, butterfly gardens, and water ponds across operational sites to support microhabitats, pollination, and ecosystem resilience. 

Through its partnership with The Animal Care Organization (TACO), Hindustan Zinc continues to enhance animal welfare via its Animal Welfare Centre, Animal Health Camps, Lumpy Skin Disease prevention drives, and Reflective Collar distribution. These interventions improve livestock health, reduce disease risks, and help farmers enhance productivity. 

Aligned with the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) and UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Hindustan Zinc integrates scientific conservation, community engagement, and sustainable development into its operations. By protecting wildlife, restoring habitats, and empowering communities, the company is setting new benchmarks for corporate leadership in biodiversity and responsible mining in India.
