Public transport must become the primary mode of urban mobility in Delhi, Union Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs Tokhan Sahu said at the Delhi Developers Meet 3.0, hosted by the NAREDCO Delhi Chapter, as per news reports.
Addressing the seminar on sustainable redevelopment and transit-oriented development (TOD), Sahu underscored the need for multimodal transport, improved last-mile connectivity and planning homes closer to workplaces to curb private vehicle dependence and address air quality concerns. He added that development must balance economic growth with environmental protection.
Speaking at the event, National Institute of Urban Affairs Director Debolina Kundu said enhancing first- and last-mile connectivity would be critical to urban redevelopment. She noted that Delhi is projected to become the world’s largest urban centre by 2035 and has recorded the fastest growth in built-up area among Indian metros between 2000 and 2025.
Industry speakers highlighted execution challenges. NBCC (India) Ltd’s Reshma Dudani called for single-window clearances, while Harsh Vardhan Bansal urged better inter-agency coordination and incentives for green buildings. Gaurav Jain said consistent execution of affordable housing norms is key to inclusive growth.
