Rustomjee Builds Model Labour Housing in Thane
Spread across 84 well-ventilated rooms, each 10x10 feet and accommodating up to six individuals, the facility offers far more than basic shelter. It represents a deeper cultural shift in how the construction workforce is valued—creating not just accommodation, but an ecosystem of care.
“At Rustomjee, we believe the people who build our cities deserve to be at the heart of them,” said Boman Rustom Irani, Chairman & MD, Rustomjee Group. “This initiative is a reflection of that belief—not just housing, but a holistic living environment that prioritizes dignity and well-being.”
Eco-Friendly and Safe by Design The facility is equipped with a 40 KLD sewage treatment plant that recycles water for landscaping and flushing, and a 200 KG organic waste composter to manage kitchen waste sustainably. Safety has been deeply integrated with fire hydrants, high-capacity fire pumps, and sprinklers installed in sensitive zones like kitchens and gas banks.
Constructed using PUF panels, the hutments offer thermal insulation, ensuring comfort in all seasons. The space also features a UV-based water purification system for safe drinking water and 42 double-burner gas stoves in a modern canteen that can cater to 280 workers simultaneously.
Beyond Basics: Health, Recreation, and Community Rustomjee’s vision extends far beyond the physical structure. The housing includes 29 toilets, 9 urinals, 15 bathing points, and a full-time doctor’s clinic along with a maternity room, crèche, barber shop, and retail outlets. To promote community and mental well-being, there’s also an open gym, sports zone, projector room, and entertainment lounge.
“Worker housing is often just a checkbox,” remarked Anupam Verma, CEO, Kapstone Constructions (a Rustomjee Group Company). “We’ve built this with the same attention to detail as any Rustomjee residence—because our workers are just as integral to our vision.”
A Model for the Future Plans are underway to replicate this model across other Rustomjee developments, reinforcing the Group’s commitment to inclusive and sustainable urban development.
