Hindustan Zinc and Tata Steel to Expand Low-Carbon Zinc Use

Hindustan Zinc (HZL) has entered into a strategic partnership with Tata Steel to expand the use of low-carbon zinc in steel manufacture. The collaboration will focus on scaling the supply of zinc produced with lower carbon intensity and on integrating zinc coatings into Tata Steel's product portfolio to enhance corrosion protection. The arrangement aims to support decarbonisation across the steel value chain and to meet rising customer demand for lower emission materials.

The agreement will involve technical engagement between the companies to adapt zinc coating processes for different steel grades and applications. It will prioritise lifecycle assessment and the adoption of cleaner energy sources in zinc production to reduce overall emissions intensity. The partners will also explore joint pilot projects and supply chain measures to ensure traceability and to quantify the emissions benefits from increased deployment of low-carbon zinc.

Industry observers noted that wider use of low-carbon zinc coatings could lower maintenance cycles for coated steel and extend asset life in infrastructure and manufacturing applications. The partnership is expected to provide manufacturers with clearer lifecycle data to support procurement of lower emission materials. It may also influence policy discussions on material standards and market incentives for lower carbon construction inputs.

HZL has indicated that scaling low-carbon zinc supply will require investment in process efficiencies and in renewable energy integration, and Tata Steel has signalled interest in piloting new coated products with select customers. The companies will monitor performance indicators and report progress through regular updates aimed at demonstrating emissions reductions. The collaboration aligns with broader industrial efforts to decarbonise materials supply chains and to offer customers products with reduced embodied carbon.
