JSW Steel has been named a Sustainability Champion by the World Steel Association for the eighth consecutive year, reflecting sustained commitment to responsible steel production. The worldsteel Sustainability Champions programme requires firms to provide verifiable evidence of meeting twenty criteria across environmental, social, governance and economic dimensions, to submit life cycle inventory data covering over 60 per cent of crude steel production and to hold formal industry recognition such as a Steelie Award nomination or acknowledgement under the Safety and Health Recognition Programme.

The company said the recognition demonstrates that sustainability is embedded in its business strategy and validates disciplined execution and measurable progress as the global steel industry transitions towards low carbon production. The joint managing director and chief executive signalled that the award affirmed the firm’s view that sustainability underpins long term competitiveness and shapes investment, innovation and operations at scale.

JSW Group is a diversified business with reported revenues of US$ 23 billion (bn) and interests across energy, infrastructure, cement and other sectors. The company has consolidated crude steel capacity of 35.9 million (mn) tonnes per annum, including one and a half mn in the US, and domestic capacity of 34.4 mn; planned expansion will take consolidated capacity to 43.4 mn tonnes per annum over the next three years.

The firm noted certifications including Responsible Steel, an Energy Transition Changemakers acknowledgement for its SEED project at COP28, inclusion in the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices and a top ranking in the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment. It also referenced Deming Prize awards and a high placement in World Steel Dynamics rankings as indicators of operational and sustainability performance.

JSW Steel outlined targets to reduce CO2 emissions by 42 per cent from its steel making operations by 2030 and to achieve net zero carbon emissions for operations under direct control by 2050, while powering steel making with renewable energy by 2030. The company affirmed its focus on biodiversity, air quality, water reduction and zero liquid discharge as part of its ongoing sustainability agenda.
