Tata Steel Partners USTB To Develop Low-Carbon Steelmaking Technologies

Tata Steel has entered into a strategic partnership with the University of Science and Technology Beijing (USTB) to develop low-carbon steelmaking technologies. The agreement aims to combine Tata Steel's industrial experience with USTB's academic research capabilities to accelerate decarbonisation of steel production. The collaboration was described as focusing on practical technological solutions and research programmes that can be scaled within industrial settings. It will seek to address emissions across the steel value chain from raw material processing to final product manufacture.

The partners will pursue joint research into process electrification, hydrogen-based reduction routes, and carbon capture and utilisation, where applicable for steelmaking. They will also explore digital optimisation and material efficiency measures that can reduce energy consumption and improve throughput. The research effort is expected to include laboratory studies, pilot trials and feasibility assessments that inform later industrial deployment. Emphasis will be on scalable solutions that can be integrated into large scale production environments.

Scope for the collaboration includes exchange of scientists and engineers, shared use of research facilities, and co?development of demonstration projects. The partners will set up joint working groups to align research priorities and monitor progress against shared objectives. Intellectual property arrangements and commercialisation pathways will be determined through further agreements to ensure outcomes can be adopted by the wider industry.
