In a first for Indian airports, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) is planning to introduce valet parking services at Chennai International Airport, aimed at improving passenger convenience and easing traffic flow around the terminal.

Since the inauguration of the multi-level car parking facility, passengers have expressed dissatisfaction with the long walk or buggy ride required to reach the second floor to board cabs. Many have found the queues and delays cumbersome, prompting AAI to explore more accessible options.

Responding to this feedback, AAI has finalised plans for a second cab boarding point at ground level, located opposite the T1 domestic terminal. The area will form part of a new plaza complex currently under development, featuring a walkway, seating areas, and the new cab boarding zone.

In addition to these upgrades, officials said AAI is considering the launch of dedicated valet parking services for visitors who currently park in the multi-level facility and walk to the terminal. “If valet parking is made available, it would be far more convenient for those dropping off or picking up passengers,” an AAI official said, adding that models are being evaluated to bring the service to Chennai airport.

Meanwhile, the plaza opening, which has faced repeated delays, has been postponed once again. Officials confirmed that 94 per cent of construction work has been completed and the facility is expected to open to passengers by November.

“We recognise the inconvenience passengers face. The plaza is almost ready, and the additional cab pickup point will be operational by November,” another official added.

The new valet service and ground-level cab access are expected to significantly ease congestion and improve the overall passenger experience at one of India’s busiest airports.
