Airbus has signed a Joint Study Agreement (JSA) with Gati Shakti Vishwavidyalaya (GSV) to initiate a research and development project focused on producing Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) from municipal solid waste. The collaboration aims to combine GSV’s academic and research capabilities with Airbus’ global industry expertise to develop scalable, indigenous waste-to-SAF solutions.

According to Airbus, the project aligns with India’s circular economy vision while supporting the decarbonisation of one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets. “This JSA marks a critical step in establishing a locally sourced SAF supply chain, crucial for the long-term sustainability of the Indian aviation market,” said Jürgen Westermeier, President and Managing Director, Airbus India & South Asia.

The partnership will promote applied research supporting the ‘Make in India’ and ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ missions in the energy and aviation sectors. Airbus will provide resources for advanced R&D equipment, recruit researchers and assist in municipal waste collection through the Earth Rakshak Foundation, a local NGO. The Foundation will manage the collection and delivery of waste from urban and rural areas.

Julien Manhes, Head of Sustainable Aviation Fuels and Carbon Dioxide Removal at Airbus, noted that India’s diverse feedstock — spanning agricultural residue, municipal waste and used cooking oil — positions the country to emerge as a global hub for SAF production. He added that India’s strong technological foundation further enhances its potential to lead SAF innovation.

The initiative represents a significant step towards creating a reliable, domestically produced SAF supply chain to fuel India’s long-term aviation sustainability goals.
