Bihar Begins Land Acquisition for Darbhanga Airport Upgrade

The Bihar government has released Rs 2.45 billion to acquire land for expanding Darbhanga Airport’s runway, marking a major step towards upgrading the facility to international status. A total of 90 acres is being acquired, with the funds already transferred to the Darbhanga district administration following a cabinet decision taken in January.
Bihar Chief Secretary Amrit Lal Meena has written to the Ministry of Civil Aviation, urging the Centre to expedite approval. In his communication to the Civil Aviation Secretary, Meena highlighted Darbhanga Airport’s strategic significance, citing its rising passenger numbers, vital connectivity across North Bihar and neighbouring areas, and proximity to Nepal.
This is the second formal request from Bihar, following an earlier communication made in September 2024. In October 2024, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) requested an additional 90 acres to extend the existing runway to 12,000 feet to comply with international aviation norms. Subsequently, the Ministry of Defence granted in-principle approval in December, subject to submission of a detailed proposal.
The Bihar government has set a target to complete land acquisition by August 2025. It has also reaffirmed its full commitment to supporting all future phases needed to elevate Darbhanga Airport to international standards.
