Bridgestone Corporation has launched a co-creation initiative with Ethiopian Airlines and Ethiopian Airports to reduce foreign object debris (FOD) on airside surfaces at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport. The programme marks Bridgestone’s first continuous collaboration involving both an airline and an airport.

FOD-related tyre incidents had earlier impacted operations at the airport, Ethiopian Airlines’ main hub. Leveraging its global aircraft tyre inspection system and airline-specific FOD data, Bridgestone analysed debris patterns and supported targeted mitigation measures.

The initiative included data-driven hazard mapping, optimised FOD collection strategies, strengthened patrols and awareness programmes for airport staff. As a result, aircraft tyre issues linked to FOD have fallen significantly compared to earlier periods, improving on-time performance and operational reliability.

Increased use of retreaded tyres under the programme has also supported cost efficiency and sustainability in aviation operations. Bridgestone and Ethiopian Airlines Group will continue to expand the collaboration, aligning with Bridgestone’s E8 Commitment on efficiency and extended mobility.
