Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurated the Rs two billion CIAL 2.0 project at Cochin International Airport Limited, aiming to fully digitise airport operations and enhance passenger security. The initiative is a benchmark in airport modernisation, combining social responsibility with development.

India handled 375 million air passengers in 2023–24, with a 21 per cent increase in domestic flyers, ranking third globally. Passenger numbers are expected to reach one billion annually by 2040, making airport preparedness critical.

Cochin Airport serves around 50,000 daily passengers and nearly 100,000 visitors, hosting over 400 government and private agencies, 30 airlines, and 200 commercial establishments.

The CIAL 2.0 project integrates artificial intelligence, automation, and cybersecurity measures. It introduces full-body scanners to replace physical pat-downs, an automated tray retrieval system for faster baggage screening, and 4,000 AI-enabled surveillance cameras. The bomb detection system is also being upgraded.

Other ongoing projects include apron construction for a Rs seven billion international terminal and a commercial zone near Terminal three, creating approximately 29,000 jobs.

CIAL distributed a 45 per cent dividend to investors in 2023–24 and supports local communities through infrastructure and social initiatives, including solar panel installations in the Wayanad Model Township.
