The Airport Advisory Committee, meeting for the first time since December 2024 and chaired by Shimla member of parliament Suresh Kashyap, concluded that further expansion of the table-top Shimla Airport is unfeasible due to geographical constraints. The panel recommended identifying an alternative site to meet the state’s growing tourism and aviation needs. The decision follows assessment that earlier works have not created sufficient space for larger aircraft.

Officials reported that the runway sits atop a plateau with deep gorges on both sides, preventing extension to handle aircraft larger than ATR-42. The airport currently operates two daily arrivals and departures to Delhi and Dharamshala, and the committee directed concerned departments to undertake joint surveys to locate a suitable future site. Departments were asked to study land, road and infrastructure requirements for any new development.

The meeting also addressed regional connectivity and the committee discussed a proposal to commence flights to Amritsar from September, a step that is likely to be implemented soon to improve links for tourists and pilgrims. Under the latest agreement with Alliance Air, fares for existing services have been rationalised, with the Shimla–Delhi fare fixed at Rs7,500 and the Shimla–Dharamshala fare set at about Rs4,400 to Rs4,500 to reduce disparity and make travel more affordable. The Airports Authority of India has initiated modernisation of airport infrastructure, saying the apron has been upgraded and arrangements made to accommodate two ATR-42 aircraft.

During deliberations, the committee engaged officials from the district administration, Airports Authority of India, forest, tourism, revenue and health departments, as well as representatives of Alliance Air, on passenger facilities and infrastructure improvements. Proposals include setting up a tourism counter to showcase Himachal Pradesh handicraft and promote homestays and other accommodation, improving taxi services and exploring a shuttle link from the airport. It also recommended deployment of a 108 ambulance and medical staff at the nearby Community Health Centre during flight operations and development of an alternative approach road to ease congestion.
