Delhi Airport’s Terminal 2 (T2), closed in April for a comprehensive upgrade, is set to reopen on 26 October, coinciding with the start of the aviation winter schedule. The refurbished terminal introduces several modern features, including self-service baggage drop and six passenger boarding bridges equipped with autonomous docking—a first in India.

Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) said about 120 daily domestic flights of Air India and IndiGo will shift operations to the upgraded terminal from the night of 25–26 October. In India, the winter aviation schedule runs from the last Sunday of October until the last Saturday of March.

Built four decades ago by the Airports Authority of India, T2 was closed after Terminal 1 became fully operational. The upgrade aims to make the terminal “future-ready” to handle rising passenger traffic.

“Terminal 2 is not just a facility upgrade—it’s a complete reimagination of the passenger journey,” said Videh Kumar Jaipuriar, CEO of DIAL. “Technologies like Self Baggage Drop and autonomous docking aerobridges empower travellers, optimise efficiency, and prepare Delhi Airport for the future of aviation.”

The self-service baggage drop allows passengers to scan their boarding pass, tag their luggage, and place it directly on the belt, reducing check-in wait times. The six new passenger boarding bridges use sensors and laser guidance to align automatically with aircraft doors, making turnarounds faster and safer while providing wheelchair-friendly access.

The refurbishment also includes upgraded air-conditioning and fire-safety systems, high-resolution flight information displays, redesigned signage for improved accessibility, enhanced road connectivity, and overhauled apron areas that have been in use for over 40 years.

Delhi Airport is India’s busiest, with a total annual passenger capacity of approximately 109 million.
