Delhi Airport Unveils AI-powered Airside Operations System UTAM

Delhi International Airport (DIAL) has introduced the Unified Total Airside Management (UTAM) system, an AI-powered airside operations management solution designed to enhance efficiency and safety at the airport. Developed in collaboration with WAISL, this state-of-the-art system integrates real-time data from multiple sources to provide comprehensive monitoring of aircraft movements, ground service equipment (GSE), and vehicle activity.

A centralized control room has been established to oversee all operations in real-time, improving coordination and transparency. One of the key functionalities of UTAM is its ability to track all airside vehicles, including luggage carts, fuel trucks, and maintenance vehicles, ensuring better resource management.

As the first airport in India to implement this advanced solution, DIAL has incorporated technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), the Internet of Things (IoT), and radar technology to optimise operational efficiency. The system is designed to predict and prevent delays, streamline turnarounds, and facilitate smoother coordination among airlines, ground handling agencies, and security teams.

Key Features of UTAM: ? Geofenced GSE tracking: The system monitors ground support equipment (GSE) within a designated area, tracking entry and exit times to ensure service-level compliance and issuing alerts for delays. " Aircraft movement visibility: UTAM provides a real-time view of aircraft positions within a 10, 40, and 70-mile radius, enhancing situational awareness and preparedness. " Flight hovering monitoring: The system tracks aircraft hovering in airspace and identifies potential causes with inputs from Air Traffic Control (ATC). " Accurate time recording: On Block/Off Block times for non-Visual Docking Guidance System (VDGS) parking stands are automatically captured, improving billing accuracy and reporting. " Parking stand utilisation: UTAM optimizes airside space by monitoring the status of parking stands, identifying whether they are occupied or vacant. " Baggage handling efficiency: The system tracks baggage trolleys to ensure adequate availability, optimizing baggage delivery operations." Taxiway and runway management: Runway occupancy, taxiing times, and taxiway assignments are monitored to enhance Collaborative Decision Making (CDM) and Airport Operations Control Center (APOC) performance.

With these capabilities, UTAM aims to revolutionize airside management, improving overall airport efficiency, safety, and coordination among key stakeholders.
