The Bihar government is moving ahead with the development of a new airport at Forbesganj in Araria district, near the Nepal border. This strategic infrastructure project aims to revitalise a decades-old airstrip, transforming it into Bihar’s fourth operational airport after Patna, Gaya, and the soon-to-be-launched facility at Purnia. It reflects the state’s broader vision of expanding modern infrastructure to underserved regions, thereby promoting equitable economic growth and improved connectivity.

Forbesganj’s redevelopment represents a key effort to unlock the economic potential of northern Bihar. The project will integrate the border district more closely with the national transport grid, reduce regional disparities, and support the state’s aim of building more inclusive and sustainable urban centres. A significant portion of the required land has already been secured, and the district administration has submitted a status report to the civil aviation directorate—signalling progress beyond the planning phase.

The airport is expected to establish direct connectivity with major cities such as Delhi, offering substantial advantages to local businesses, students, professionals, and the budding tourism sector. With a faster, low-emission alternative to long-distance road travel, the facility will enhance the mobility of people and goods across the region.

Notably, the site holds historical significance, housing an airstrip dating back to the 1960s. Rather than building afresh, the state plans to refurbish the existing airstrip, making the project both cost-effective and environmentally responsible. This reuse of legacy infrastructure aligns with sustainable urban development practices and maximises the impact of prior investments.

The airport’s location near the Nepal border adds strategic value, potentially enabling greater cross-border trade and reinforcing economic and diplomatic ties with the neighbouring country. Improved air connectivity could open new corridors for cooperation and regional integration.

The government also intends to develop the airport within an environmentally sustainable framework. Plans include features such as solar power generation, rainwater harvesting, and robust waste management systems to ensure a zero-net-carbon footprint. Equally vital will be the development of last-mile connectivity and public transport infrastructure to ensure that the airport benefits the wider population and not just a privileged few.
