Guwahati’s Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport has earned global acclaim by winning the International Architecture Award 2025 in the Transport category. The newly built Terminal 2 (T2), inspired by Assam’s culture and biodiversity, was recognised among just seven airports worldwide for its architectural excellence and sustainable design.

The award, presented annually by The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design in partnership with The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies and Metropolitan Arts Press, celebrates outstanding achievements in architecture and urban planning.

Serving as the main aviation hub of Northeast India, Guwahati International Airport connects the region to key domestic and international destinations. T2 forms part of a major redevelopment project aimed at modernising facilities, improving passenger comfort, and meeting rising travel demand.

Drawing from the resilience of bamboo and the grace of the foxtail orchid, T2 features tea-trunk-inspired columns and a layered, curved roof for an organic yet futuristic look. Designed by NUDES, led by architect Nuru Karim, the terminal integrates sustainability into its core — from open-air spaces and lush greenery to features that create an experience akin to a biodiversity park.

The interior combines traditional influences with modern efficiency, incorporating wooden-style walkways, spacious open areas, and abundant natural lighting to foster a calm, welcoming atmosphere while keeping environmental impact low.

With this international recognition, Guwahati International Airport not only enhances its status as a modern aviation hub but also sets a benchmark for sustainable airport design in India.
