Hubballi Airport Upgrade to Host Bigger Aircraft Soon

Hubballi airport will soon be capable of accommodating larger aircraft such as the Airbus A320, as apron expansion and reconfiguration works progress. Once completed, the upgraded apron will allow for 10 larger aircraft and four smaller aircraft to be parked simultaneously.
This project forms part of a broader airport upgradation initiative, which includes construction of a new eco-friendly terminal building, additional apron bays, four aerobridges, and supporting infrastructure. The total development cost is Rs 2.7 billion.
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has floated a tender worth Rs 350.2 million for the construction of new apron bays, with a completion timeline of 10 months. Currently, the airport can accommodate three Code ‘C’ aircraft like the Boeing 737-700, Airbus A320, and Embraer ERJ 190-100, along with four smaller aircraft such as ATRs.
Following expansion, the apron will support 10 Code ‘C’ aircraft and four smaller aircraft at once. Airport director Rupesh Kumar noted that the upgrade is expected to attract more airlines to operate from Hubballi.
At present, two larger aircraft operate routes to Mumbai and Delhi. Due to limited apron space, the airport cannot facilitate additional flights in the same time slot. The expansion addresses this constraint, making Hubballi a more viable hub for aviation services in north Karnataka.
Recognised as one of the state’s fastest-growing cities, Hubballi is well-connected by road and rail. Increasing air passenger demand has prompted this upgrade. The current terminal, inaugurated in 2017, spans 3,600 square metres and can handle 600 passengers.
Upon completion, the new terminal will expand to 20,000 square metres with a capacity to manage 2,400 passengers. Designed with sustainability in mind, it will feature 5-star green ratings, along with waste management, rainwater harvesting, and solar energy systems. The terminal is expected to be operational by 2026.
