IndiGo, BIAL Partner To Build Bengaluru’s Largest MRO Hub

IndiGo has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bangalore International Airport Ltd (BIAL) to develop a major Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility at Kempegowda International Airport. The initiative marks a significant step in boosting aircraft repair capabilities and operational efficiency for the airline’s growing fleet.
As part of the agreement, BIAL will allocate approximately 31 acres of land for the dedicated MRO complex, which will support the maintenance of both narrow-body and wide-body aircraft. The facility is designed to improve aircraft availability and reduce turnaround times, ultimately enhancing cost and operational efficiencies.
“This is a strategic step in expanding our MRO capabilities,” said Pieter Elbers, CEO of IndiGo. “The collaboration will support the long-term growth of aviation and connectivity in the region.”
Hari Marar, Managing Director and CEO of BIAL, welcomed the partnership, adding, “IndiGo’s decision to build its largest MRO at BLR Airport reflects Bengaluru’s rising stature as an aviation and aerospace hub. This development strengthens our collaboration and contributes to Karnataka’s broader aerospace ambitions.”
The MoU also includes provisions for cooperation in network expansion, infrastructure upgrades, and joint marketing initiatives. Officials noted that the project aligns with Karnataka’s vision to develop a robust aerospace and defence ecosystem.
IndiGo already operates MRO facilities in Delhi and Bengaluru, but the upcoming infrastructure at Kempegowda Airport will be its most extensive to date, catering to a fleet of more than 400 aircraft.
