IndiGo has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bangalore International Airport Ltd (BIAL) to establish a large-scale Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility at Kempegowda International Airport. The move aims to significantly enhance the airline’s aircraft repair capabilities and support its rapidly expanding fleet of over 400 aircraft.
Under the agreement, BIAL will allocate approximately 31 acres of land for the dedicated MRO unit. The facility will be equipped to service both narrow-body and wide-body aircraft, thereby strengthening IndiGo’s operational efficiency and improving aircraft availability through reduced turnaround times.
“This marks a strategic step for IndiGo in expanding our MRO capabilities. Our collaboration with BIAL is aimed at supporting long-term aviation growth and enhancing connectivity,” said Pieter Elbers, CEO of IndiGo.
Hari Marar, Managing Director and CEO of BIAL, welcomed the development, noting that the partnership cements Bengaluru’s role as a growing hub for aviation and aerospace. “We are pleased that IndiGo has chosen BLR Airport for its latest MRO facility. This further strengthens our relationship and signals strong growth potential for the regional aviation ecosystem,” he stated.
Beyond the MRO setup, the MoU also outlines areas of cooperation in network expansion, infrastructure development, and joint marketing initiatives.
The project aligns with the Karnataka government’s broader agenda to advance the state’s aerospace and defence sectors. Officials confirmed the new facility is expected to bring cost savings, enhance turnaround efficiency, and provide employment opportunities, reinforcing India’s aviation infrastructure.
IndiGo already runs MRO operations in Delhi and Bengaluru. The new facility at Bengaluru Airport is anticipated to be the airline’s largest yet.
