Lucknow’s Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport (CCSIA) is set for a major upgrade, with plans to extend its runway from 2,744 metres to 3,500 metres. This expansion will enable direct long-haul flights from Lucknow to destinations in the US and Europe—meeting a long-standing demand from the public and aviation stakeholders.

The extended runway will accommodate wide-body, fuel-laden aircraft such as the Airbus A350, Boeing 777-300ER, and Boeing 747-8, which require greater take-off distances for non-stop intercontinental travel. At present, international passengers must transit through hubs like Delhi or Mumbai due to CCSIA’s limited runway capacity.

The project has received in-principle approval from the government, and the district magistrate has requested Gata-wise land records from airport authorities to initiate the acquisition of 53 acres of land. Once secured, the runway will be extended by 700 metres. The land spans villages including Raheemabad, Mohammadpur Bhaktikhera, and Gadaura in Sarojini Nagar. Environmental clearance has already been granted, and preparatory work has begun, including the clearing of 150 metres of space on both sides of the existing runway.

District Magistrate Vishak G confirmed that efforts are underway to expedite land acquisition in coordination with airport officials. While some resistance from local landowners has caused minor delays, the process is progressing steadily.

The upgraded runway will not only allow longer flights but also improve safety margins during take-offs and landings—especially under poor weather conditions or in fully loaded aircraft.

Currently, Lucknow has direct international connectivity to 11 cities, including Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Muscat, Riyadh, Dammam, Jeddah, Bangkok, and Kuala Lumpur. The expansion will significantly boost its aviation profile.
