Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to inaugurate the first phase of Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) on September 30, coinciding with his scheduled visit to Mumbai for the launch of the Worli–Cuffe Parade stretch of Metro Line 3. Though the Kalbadevi and Girgaon metro stations are not yet ready, two of the four entry/exit points will be opened after the launch, according to officials.

The Mahayuti government had delayed the ceremony during pitru paksha, later fixing it on the auspicious eighth day of Navratri. Despite multiple missed deadlines earlier this year, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy CM Eknath Shinde finalised September 30 as the target following a site review in July.

NMIA will feature two parallel runways, advanced passenger facilities, and a baggage handling system with 360-degree barcode scanning for speed and accuracy. Powered by 37 MW of renewable energy, the airport will only use electric or alternative-fuel vehicles on-site. Connectivity will be ensured through road, rail, metro, water links, and the Atal Setu, with future plans including an elevated road to Thane.

The project, envisioned decades ago and launched in 2018 by Modi, had faced delays due to the pandemic and governance changes. Preparations are also under way to highlight Maharashtra’s cultural heritage, with a Shiv Smarak and Shiv Mudra planned along the approach road, as directed by Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar.
