A new metro station will be part of the upcoming Golden Line to provide direct connectivity between Delhi airport’s Terminal 1 (T1) and Terminal 3 (T3), a senior official confirmed. Among the three terminals at the Indira Gandhi International Airport, Terminals 2 and 3 are located close to each other, while Terminal 1 lies a few kilometres away.

In an interview with PTI, Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) CEO Videh Kumar Jaipuriar said that the new integrated station is being planned to link Aerocity with Terminal 1.

“The Golden Line was earlier planned to terminate at Aerocity. We have convinced the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to extend it up to Terminal 1,” Jaipuriar stated. “This extension will effectively connect T1 to Aerocity, from where passengers can switch to the Airport Express Line.”

Currently, the Airport Metro Express Line (Orange Line) serves Terminal 3, while the Magenta Line connects to Terminal 1. However, there is no direct metro link between the two terminals.

Jaipuriar added that efforts are underway to develop an integrated transport hub at Aerocity. “The RRTS (Regional Rapid Transit System) will also come to Aerocity, and one of the APM (Automated People Mover) stations is planned there as per the current layout. It will become a truly integrated, multi-modal station,” he explained.

The Golden Line, also known as the Tughlakabad–Aerocity corridor under Phase IV of the Delhi Metro, is currently under construction.

DIAL, which operates the airport, also plans to introduce an ‘air train’ to ensure seamless connectivity between Terminals 1, 2, and 3. The proposed Automated People Mover (APM) system will be a combination of elevated and at-grade tracks and will be implemented on a design, build, finance, operate, and transfer model.

The Indira Gandhi International Airport, managed by DIAL—a GMR Group-led consortium—currently handles over 100 million passengers annually and operates three terminals and four runways.
