Prayagraj Airport has become the first domestic airport in Uttar Pradesh to be equipped with six aerobridges, marking a significant infrastructure milestone. This places the airport ahead of other key domestic hubs in the state, second only to Lucknow’s Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport, which has eight aerobridges and handles international traffic.

Unlike Lucknow and Varanasi, which manage both international and domestic operations, Prayagraj remains a domestic-only facility. Varanasi’s Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport, despite higher flight volume, currently has only four aerobridges. With this development, Prayagraj surpasses Varanasi, Kanpur, Gorakhpur, and Agra in terms of Passenger Boarding Bridge (PBB) infrastructure.

Of the six aerobridges installed, four are operational, and two remain on standby, ready to meet projected growth in air traffic. These aerobridges will enhance passenger comfort by offering weather-proof and secure boarding, particularly benefiting elderly, disabled travellers, and those visiting during high-volume events.

Officials noted the infrastructure upgrade is timed to support massive upcoming events such as Maha Kumbh 2031, expected to draw large numbers of tourists and pilgrims. The improved boarding infrastructure will help reduce congestion during peak periods, enabling a smoother and more sustainable passenger flow.

This forward-looking development is a strategic boost to Prayagraj’s role in India’s aviation network, especially within the Tier-II city framework. It aligns with government plans to expand air travel accessibility and strengthen regional connectivity.

Although current flight frequency remains moderate, the installation of six aerobridges signals long-term planning and ambition. The infrastructure positions Prayagraj to scale operations efficiently without future overhauls, reinforcing the city’s emergence as a key transport and tourism hub in Uttar Pradesh. With air travel demand projected to rise sharply, the airport is now equipped to meet future needs and contribute to the region’s urban and economic growth.
