Pune Airport is set for a major capacity boost, with the Indian Air Force (IAF) agreeing to transfer 13 acre of land to the Airports Authority of India (AAI). The official handover is expected by October this year, paving the way for key infrastructure development.

Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Murlidhar Mohol, confirmed that the land transfer process is in its final stages and that work will begin soon after the formal handover. To facilitate the exchange, the AAI has already built office spaces and other facilities for the IAF at an alternate location, which are now ready for use.

The additional land will be utilised to build five new aircraft parking bays and three remote bays. This expansion is expected to ease congestion at the busy airport by reducing delays caused by limited parking space for aircraft.

Beyond airside improvements, authorities are also focusing on road access and the overall surroundings of the airport. On Friday, Minister Mohol chaired a joint meeting with officials from AAI, IAF and the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to discuss the broader development plan.

The discussions included widening approach roads, improving pedestrian infrastructure, preserving nearby heritage sites, and implementing a beautification plan for the airport zone. The Ministry of Defence has also granted permission for PMC to begin work on these civic upgrades.

Officials said the planned developments will not only streamline flight operations but also improve traveller convenience and enhance the visual appeal of the airport’s vicinity.
