SIDAR experts have warned of a connectivity crisis for Vizag's new Bhogapuram Airport and urged immediate action to integrate the project with regional transport networks. They indicated the airport could struggle to serve projected passenger and cargo volumes unless access by road, rail and sea is improved given projected shifts in trade and commuting patterns. The warning followed assessments of current plans and projected urban growth in the region. Planners were urged to consider multimodal solutions urgently.\n\nThe experts proposed three plans to avert the crisis, including an innovative sea route that would link coastal hubs to the airport and to support balanced regional development. The first plan prioritises road upgrades and dedicated expressways to reduce travel time from the city. The second plan recommends a fast rail corridor to provide reliable mass transit for passengers and freight. The third plan envisions a sea link using feeder vessels to create a multimodal chain that bypasses congested land routes.\n\nOfficials were advised to sequence investments to deliver immediate relief while enabling longer term projects. Short term measures would focus on improving last mile connectivity and enhancing public transport links to terminals and to improve safety and punctuality. Medium term work would include rail development and intermodal terminals to handle increasing cargo flows. Long term planning was recommended to synchronise urban expansion with transport corridors.\n\nThe experts cautioned that failure to act could limit the airport's economic benefits and strain existing infrastructure in neighbouring districts. They recommended stakeholder coordination across state agencies, port authorities and private investors to mobilise resources and technical expertise and to align investment priorities across jurisdictions. Timely implementation of the three plans was presented as essential to ensure that Bhogapuram fulfils its role as a gateway for the region. Authorities were encouraged to adopt a comprehensive multimodal strategy.
