The central government is willing to extend its support for the construction of three new airports in Telangana if the state government expedites the requisite land acquisition.

This was said in a letter to Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao by Union Minister of Tourism and Culture G Kishan Reddy. Telangana currently has only one operational airport, Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Shamshabad, on the outskirts of Hyderabad. Although there is an airport in Hyderabad, it is not used for ordinary air travellers because it is only for VIP aircraft.

In contrast, neighbouring Andhra Pradesh has six operational civilian airports: Visakhapatnam, Rajahmundry, Vijayawada, Tirupati, Kadapa, and Kurnool. Kishan Reddy reminded the Telangana chief minister in his letter that the Airports Authority of India (AAI) had previously submitted feasibility reports for the three new airports, to be built in Adilabad, Warangal, and Nizamabad, to the state government in June 2021
