TN to provide 10.72 acre more land for Vellore airport
There are now a runway, taxiway, ground support equipment, air traffic control (ATC) and aviation information receiving centre, terminal building, and oil depot at the airport that is being constructed on a 97-acre tract of land.
Nevertheless, because the state government has not made a decision regarding the compensation package for acquiring property, the land acquisition process has been delaying the opening of the new airport.
According to sources who spoke to IANS, the government has now sped up the procedure and has started the process of acquiring the 10.72 acres of additional land needed for the airport.
A few years ago, Vellore's new airport received approval as part of the second phase of the UDAN-RCS (Ude Desh Ke Aam Nagrik-A Regional Connectivity Program). The Indian government is attempting to connect smaller towns, particularly those that are adjacent to major cities and second-tier cities.
The famed Christian Medical College, Vellore's patients as well as the city's numerous students studying in its technical institutions—many of whom are from North Indian states—will benefit from the city's new airport.
However, the recent declaration by a private aviation operator that it will fly a 19-seater aircraft is thought to be the immediate cause of the rapid uptick in Vellore airport-related operations, including land acquisition.
Importantly, General V.K. Singh, the Minister of State for Civil Aviation, made his most notable visit to Vellore Airport in October 2022.
