Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu inspected the upcoming Jewar Airport site on Friday and participated in a detailed review meeting. The Noida International Airport, located near Jewar, is one of India’s largest greenfield aviation projects and is expected to significantly enhance connectivity across the Delhi National Capital Region (NCR).

The airport is being developed under a public-private partnership model, with Zurich Airport International AG awarded the 40-year concession in 2020. Construction commenced in June 2022, and the first phase is scheduled to become operational by December 2025. The long-delayed second airport for the NCR had been discussed since the 2010 Commonwealth Games but faced postponements due to constraints linked to the expansion of Delhi’s existing airport.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone in November 2021. The project is being executed by Yamuna International Airport Private Limited (YIAPL), a subsidiary of Zurich Airport International AG, while Tata Projects is responsible for engineering, procurement, and construction.

Situated approximately 75 kilometres from Delhi, the airport will become the NCR’s second international gateway after Indira Gandhi International Airport. It is expected to serve as a key cargo hub, strengthening logistics infrastructure and driving broader economic development in western Uttar Pradesh.

The project includes extensive connectivity infrastructure, including six road links, a rapid rail-cum-metro system, and planned pod taxi routes. It will also feature a CAT-III B Instrument Landing System, enabling operations during low-visibility conditions.

Jewar Airport is anticipated to stimulate significant real estate activity and create around 100,000 direct and indirect jobs. Designed around the theme of “Swiss efficiency and Indian hospitality”, the project places strong emphasis on sustainability, targeting net-zero emissions and minimised environmental impact.

The long-term master plan comprises four phases, beginning with two runways in Phase 1 and future expansion to a six-runway airport, positioning it among the world’s largest once fully developed.
