Andhra Pradesh received central approval for the Kharagpur-Amaravati greenfield highway, a 1,107-km corridor that includes a 457-km four-lane stretch within the state. The Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister and the Union Road Transport Minister after the clearance of the project, which carries an estimated cost of Rs 32,000 crore, equivalent to Rs 320 billion (Rs 320 bn). The announcement was reported by PTI.

The corridor is intended to establish a direct link between Andhra Pradesh and eastern India and to strengthen regional connectivity. Officials said the route will reduce logistics costs for farmers and industry in the state by shortening transit times and by providing a faster corridor for goods and passengers. State planners view the project as supporting the development of Amaravati as an economic hub by attracting investment in trade and manufacturing.

The Kharagpur-Amaravati link is planned as an access-controlled expressway that would typically bypass towns and ease urban congestion. Planners expect the design to deliver substantial reductions in travel time and transport costs compared with existing coastal routes that are often congested. The corridor will cut through several states, providing an alternative high-speed route between West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh and improving resilience of the national highway network.

Central authorities have approved several greenfield corridors in recent years as part of a broader strategy to expand national road connectivity and support economic growth. For Andhra Pradesh, the new link is expected to complement ongoing infrastructure initiatives around the capital region and to boost agricultural and industrial exports by shortening transit times to markets in West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand and other eastern states. The project is likely to feature in state planning as Amaravati continues to be promoted as a centre for trade and employment.
