The Salem City Police will soon install eight Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras at key locations on two national highways to monitor and penalise speeding vehicles, in a move aimed at reducing accidents.

Four ANPR cameras will be set up at Erumapalayam Junction on the Salem–Ulundurpet National Highway and another four at Ariyanoor on the Salem–Coimbatore National Highway. The total project cost is estimated at Rs 1 million. Installation is expected to be completed by the second week of August.

Currently, 24 ANPR cameras are operational at 12 locations, including Five Roads Junction and the two-tier flyover, to detect helmet and seat belt violations at 31 signal points across the city.

Despite existing measures like barricades to regulate speed, frequent accidents—particularly at night—continue to occur on these highways. According to officials, over 700 to 800 vehicles exceed the 80 kmph speed limit on these routes daily.
