BBMP begins ‘rapid work’ on pilot basis on Old Madras Road

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) started "rapid road work" on a 500-metre stretch at the Binnamangala junction, where 100 Feet Road and Old Madras Road meet, on Tuesday. The pilot project, which paves 5-foot-wide, 2-foot-long, and 7-inch-thick concrete slabs on the road, is seen as an alternative to white-topping (covering of an existing road with a layer of portland cement concrete).

According to officials, slabs have been laid for a 100-metre stretch, and the remaining work will be completed by Saturday. During white-topping, vehicular traffic is disrupted, resulting in massive traffic jams. To avoid this, the BBMP is putting into practise an innovative technology known as rapid road work. Road curing is no longer required. If successful, this technology will be implemented in other parts of the city.
