BBMP Plans Rs 8,100 Crore 18-km Tunnel in Bangalore

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has announced an ambitious project to construct an 18-km tunnel road in Bangalore, aiming to significantly alleviate the city's notorious traffic congestion. This project, estimated at Rs 8,100 crore, will connect key locations from Kalyan Nagar to Silk Board, including Lingarajapuram, Ejipura, and Koramangala.

The tunnel will be a bi-directional, two-lane road designed to streamline traffic flow and reduce travel time. It will be equipped with state-of-the-art safety features, including fire alarms, ventilation systems, and emergency exits, ensuring a secure transit route for commuters. The construction of this tunnel will involve advanced tunnelling techniques, aimed at minimising disruption to the city's surface traffic and infrastructure.

This initiative is part of a broader strategy by BBMP to enhance Bangalore's urban infrastructure and address the growing transportation demands of its expanding population. The project is currently in the planning phase, with detailed project reports (DPRs) and feasibility studies underway.

BBMP Commissioner Tushar Giri Nath emphasised that this tunnel road will not only decongest surface roads but also contribute to the city's economic growth by improving connectivity. The project is expected to be executed in phases, with completion targeted over the next few years, subject to approvals and clearances from various government bodies.
