BBMP To Build Roads in SWD Zones To Ease RR Nagar Traffic

To boost road infrastructure and reduce traffic congestion, BBMP Chief Commissioner Maheshwar Rao has directed the development of new roads near Hosakerehalli Kodi Road in Bengaluru’s RR Nagar zone. These will be constructed within the buffer zones of local stormwater drains (SWDs).
During a site inspection, Rao stated that land required for the project could be acquired using the Transferable Development Rights (TDR) policy, which allows developers to gain building rights elsewhere in exchange for surrendering land for public use. He also reviewed adjoining junctions and instructed that road repairs be undertaken to improve vehicle movement in the area.
This initiative is part of the broader ‘Sanchara Yukta’ programme. BS Prahallad, Technical Director of Bengaluru Smart Infrastructure Limited (B-SMILE), said the plan involves constructing 300 km of roads along SWD buffer zones citywide, with 70 km allocated for the RR Nagar zone alone.
Prahallad added that these buffer areas are often underutilised and developing them into roadways would significantly improve access between key areas while relieving traffic pressure. The strategy also enhances urban resilience by retaining stormwater drainage capacity during the monsoon.
