Approval has been granted for the Betul-Khandwa four-lane highway, a project expected to strengthen road connectivity across central India and reduce long distance travel times. The scheme forms part of the Betul-Khandwa-Vadodara corridor and is designed to link key cities in Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat. Planners foresee clearer access to major urban centres and logistics nodes once construction advances. Officials expect the corridor to boost regional trade and to lower logistics costs for manufacturers and traders.

The route will improve access to Nagpur, Jalgaon, Bhusawal, Akola, Washim, Hingoli and Nanded while providing better linkage towards Ahmedabad and Vadodara in Gujarat. It will connect important transport and logistics hubs, including Indore Airport, Nagpur Airport, Indore’s Multi-Modal Logistics Park and railway stations in Betul and Khandwa. The corridor is aligned with National Highway 347B and will integrate with NH-47, NH-753 and NH-52 to enhance freight movement.

Currently the Indore-Nagpur road journey can take around 13 to 14 hours because large portions remain two-lane, leading to slower average speeds. The Betul-Khandwa four-lane upgrade includes a 125-kilometre stretch on NH-347B aimed at offering a faster alternative and reducing transit time to around six hours between Indore and Nagpur. Commuters and freight operators are expected to gain from shorter travel times and improved safety on upgraded alignments.

The highway could also play a strategic role during Ujjain Simhastha 2028, when pilgrim traffic to Mahakaleshwar and Omkareshwar temples is likely to rise. Improved road links are expected to facilitate easier access for visitors from Maharashtra and Gujarat and to distribute visitor flows more evenly across regional nodes. Beyond pilgrimage, the corridor is projected to support tourism, accelerate freight movement and contribute to economic activity across central India.
