The Odisha government has approved the expansion of the Bhawanipatna-Khariar road from two lanes to four lanes, the PWD minister said, saying the long-standing demand of local people will be met. The minister said the upgraded route would create opportunities for residents of Bhawanipatna and Khariar and improve connectivity between Kalahandi and Nuapada districts.

Officials said the widened 70-km road will allow passenger buses, ambulances and private vehicles to reach destinations faster, reducing fuel and time wastage and easing access to schools, colleges, hospitals and government offices. Farmers and traders will be able to transport paddy, vegetables, forest produce and other goods to market more easily, which is expected to boost economic activity. The minister indicated that shops, petrol pumps, hotels, godowns and small industries are likely to be attracted to the corridor, generating direct and indirect employment.

Authorities plan to construct five major bridges and 15 minor bridges along the route and to repair and renovate the old bridge over the Tel river. The estimated cost of the 70-km-long road project is Rs 6.4 billion (bn) and the bridges are to be built at an estimated cost of Rs 0.91 bn, officials said. The minister added that wider roads will help reduce accidents, attract tourists and support long-term growth of Western Odisha.

Officials said improved connectivity will also provide crucial access to interior areas during natural disasters such as floods and cyclones, enhancing relief and rescue operations. The project is presented as a strategic investment in regional development that is expected to ease movement to cities and markets for surrounding villages. Work timelines and tender details were not specified by the minister.
