The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved construction of a four-lane access-controlled National Highway 927 between Barabanki and Bahraich in Uttar Pradesh spanning 101.515 km. The project was approved on HAM, with the Cabinet recording an estimated project cost of Rs 69.69 bn. The highway aims to address severe geometric deficiencies, sharp curves and congestion in built-up areas across Barabanki and Bahraich districts.

Designed as an access-controlled corridor with continuous service roads and extensive bypasses, the alignment will avoid major habitations and link with national and state highways to improve average travel speeds. Officials noted that the upgraded route is expected to reduce travel time to about one hour along the Lucknow-Rupaidiha corridor and to enhance road safety, fuel efficiency and vehicle operating costs. The scheme includes a bypass length of 48.28 km and will connect with NH-27, NH-330N, NH-730, SH-13 and SH-30B.

The upgraded corridor will provide multimodal integration by linking to airports, multiple railway stations and the Rupaidiha land port, supporting movement of goods and passengers across the region. It will also support one special economic zone and two Mega Food Parks while improving access to aspirational districts and stimulating agri-trade, tourism and cross-border commerce with Nepal via the Nepalganj border. The development is expected to strengthen the PM GatiShakti economic and logistics nodes and improve regional investment prospects.

The project carries a reported total civil cost of Rs 69.59 bn and is expected to generate around 3.654 million (mn) person-days of direct employment and 4.304 million (mn) person-days of indirect employment. Annual average daily traffic for fiscal year 2028 was reported as 28,557 Passenger Car Units (PCU) for package one and 21,27 Passenger Car Units for package two. Implementation under HAM will seek to balance public and private investment and expedite delivery. Construction and improved connectivity are projected to enhance regional mobility and socio-economic development.
