The Central Government has sanctioned over 10,000 km of rural road projects across Jammu & Kashmir, Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh and Sikkim under Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana–IV (PMGSY-IV). The approvals mark a major push to strengthen last-mile connectivity in remote and underserved regions.

With the implementation of these projects, around 3,270 previously unconnected habitations are expected to gain access to all-weather roads, improving reach to healthcare, education and livelihood opportunities. The initiative is aimed at fostering inclusive growth while supporting the broader vision of Viksit Bharat.

Under PMGSY-IV, connectivity is being extended to habitations with populations of over 500 in plains, 250 in hill and north-eastern states, and 100 in left-wing extremism-affected districts, as per Census 2011 norms. The programme targets the construction of 62,500 km of all-weather rural roads, along with essential bridges along the alignments.

The Union Cabinet had approved the implementation of PMGSY-IV for the period FY 2024–25 to 2028–29, with a total outlay of Rs 701.25 billion including a central share of Rs 490.87 billion and a state contribution of Rs 210.37 billion.
