The State Highways Department has revived plans to construct two down ramps from the Gandhipuram flyover in Coimbatore to improve traffic movement and connectivity in the city.

The flyover, which runs from Nanjappa Road to Ganapathy, currently lacks ramps for vehicles heading towards 100 Feet Road or those proceeding to Bharathiar Road from Ganapathy. The department had originally submitted a proposal in 2020, and the state government had granted administrative approval for the construction at an estimated cost of Rs 0.24 billion. The project involved the acquisition of about 372.60 square feet of land.

However, the plan was put on hold following proposals to establish a metro rail corridor along Sathyamangalam Road. With the Coimbatore metro rail project now rejected, the Highways Department has decided to revive the flyover ramp proposal, officials said.

The revised plan envisages two-lane down ramps, one connecting to 100 Feet Road and the other to Bharathiar Road. The department is assessing the need for additional land acquisition for the ramp leading to 100 Feet Road. Officials clarified that no private land acquisition will be required for the ramp connecting to Bharathiar Road.

Department sources said the revised cost estimates will be finalised shortly, and the project is expected to move forward within a month, improving traffic flow and easing congestion in the Gandhipuram area.
