With the monsoon season officially retreating, the Public Works Department (PWD) has begun major road strengthening and repair work across the national capital.

According to officials, the department will repair 12 major roads that connect various parts of Delhi to the Outer Ring Road, one of the city’s busiest transport corridors. Heavy monsoon rains and waterlogging have caused severe damage to several arterial routes, resulting in potholes, cracks, and weakened foundations, which have disrupted traffic flow and created safety hazards for commuters.

“The post-monsoon condition of many roads has deteriorated due to water accumulation. We are prioritising stretches with high daily traffic volume and those that are vital for connecting inner areas of the city to the Outer Ring Road. A tender has already been floated,” an official said.

The roads identified for immediate repair include Timarpur Road, Wazirabad Flyover–Mall Road, Lucknow Road, Polo Road, Bhamashah Road, Main Burari Road, Vishwavidyalaya Marg, Chhatra Marg, Shreya Mishra Marg, Sudhir Bose Marg, and Guru Teg Bahadur Road.

The project, estimated at Rs 450 million, will be executed in phases over the next few months. Officials added that the initiative will use advanced road-laying techniques and enhanced drainage systems to improve durability and minimise weather-related damage in the future.

To maintain quality and accountability, the PWD has mandated regular monitoring and third-party inspections throughout the project period.

Earlier, the Delhi government announced plans to repair and resurface 600 kilometres of roads across the capital during the year as part of its broader infrastructure upgrade strategy.
