Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has unveiled a Rs 240 billion infrastructure overhaul aimed at transforming the Capital’s road network.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Gupta announced that key arterial roads — Rohtak Road (Punjabi Bagh to Nangloi), Ashram to Badarpur, and MG Road — have now been transferred to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). These routes will be upgraded into signal-free corridors featuring comprehensive infrastructure upgrades, including drainage systems, side lanes, and real-time monitoring technologies.

“Previously, multiple agencies resulted in fragmented execution and chronic waterlogging. Now, NHAI will serve as the single-point authority, supported by the Delhi Public Works Department,” she said.

The announcement followed a high-level meeting chaired by Union Road and Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari and attended by Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena, Union Minister of State Harsh Malhotra, Delhi Cabinet Ministers, MPs, and senior officials.

Gupta outlined several critical initiatives designed to ease traffic congestion and reduce pollution, including a 7-kilometre underground tunnel from Shiv Murti to Nelson Mandela Road, an elevated road from INA to the airport connecting eventually to Faridabad and Gurgaon, and extensions of Urban Extension Road-II linking Alipur to Tronica City and the Delhi–Dehradun route.

A feasibility study is underway for a tunnel connecting Sarai Kale Khan to IGI Airport. Additionally, a 20-kilometre link road from Inderlok Metro Station along the Munak Canal to Sonipat has been proposed to alleviate traffic at Mukarba Chowk, benefiting thousands of commuters travelling between Delhi and Haryana.

The Chief Minister noted that the NHAI is currently executing road and transport projects worth Rs 350 billion across the Capital, complementing Rs 640 billion of completed works covering 1,578 kilometres of roads. Detailed Project Reports for upcoming projects valued at Rs 240 billion, spanning 128 kilometres, have been prepared and await implementation.

Furthermore, the NHAI has sanctioned Rs 150 crore for constructing Road Over Bridges (ROBs) and Under Bridges (RUBs) to eliminate bottlenecks near railway crossings.

Expressing gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Minister Gadkari, Gupta stated, “With Rs 1.25 trillion worth of decongestion projects in Delhi, the Centre has demonstrated unparalleled commitment to transforming Delhi into a clean, green, and world-class city.”
