Delhi to Build Flyovers and Underpasses on Key Stretches
The Mehrauli?Mahipalpur road connecting to Aruna Asaf Ali Road near the Jawaharlal Nehru University campus is approximately a nine km stretch where the department proposes a combination of a flyover, an underpass and a U?turn beneath the flyover to improve traffic circulation. The proposals respond to persistent heavy traffic flow on the corridor that contributes to frequent jams during peak hours and constrains movement between central and southern parts of the city.
Between the Kanti Nagar bridge and the Telco T?point, which links to Mahipalpur Road, the PWD has identified an approximately six km stretch for a dedicated flyover to separate through traffic from local flows and reduce intersection delays. In North Delhi, a nine km stretch along Bawana Road is slated for relief through a flyover as part of the same corridor initiative. Officials also said a feasibility study has been commissioned for a flyover from Kanjhawala Chowk to Mangolpuri on the Outer Ring Road at a cost of Rs 34.4 mn.
The study is expected to run for a period of four to five months and will examine options to decongest an approximately 10 km length on that corridor. Authorities stated that the combination of grade separation, new turning provisions and targeted underpasses aims to streamline vehicular movement, shorten travel times and reduce recurrent bottlenecks without proposing immediate changes to public transport routes. The PWD intends to sequence construction to minimise disruption and to follow statutory clearances and tender processes.
