Commuters travelling along Ghodbunder Road in Thane are set to experience smoother journeys, with the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) undertaking a major expansion project to transform the arterial route into a 7+7-lane concrete corridor. The Rs 5 billion upgrade aims to eliminate chronic traffic congestion and integrate with Thane’s wider infrastructure network.
The project is part of a broader Rs 52 billion infrastructure expansion plan for Thane, one of the fastest-growing urban centres within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). According to MMRDA Commissioner Sanjay Mukherjee, the initiative is crucial to address mobility challenges in the area.
Calling Thane “one of the most dynamic and rapidly developing parts of MMR,” Mukherjee said that traffic congestion must be resolved through coordinated road and rail solutions.
Under the Rs 52 billion development programme, the MMRDA is also building 23 internal roads at a cost of Rs 7 billion, and a 3+3 lane elevated corridor between Anand Nagar and Saket, costing Rs 18 billion. Another key undertaking, the Rs 22 billion Thane Coastal Road, will form an east–west corridor running parallel to Ghodbunder Road, providing a vital link across the city.
“Together, these projects will ensure smoother local traffic flow, faster intercity connectivity, and a lasting solution to Thane’s congestion,” Mukherjee said.
The primary goal of the Ghodbunder Road expansion is to eliminate bottlenecks and improve travel times for the hundreds of thousands of commuters who face delays during peak hours. The widened corridor will also complement ongoing **metro projects—Lines 4, 4A, and 5—**which are expected to provide high-capacity mass transit and further ease pressure on the road network.
In addition, the MMRDA is carrying out traffic simulation studies in Thane to develop short-, medium-, and long-term strategies for congestion management. Construction for the widened corridor is expected to commence soon, with efforts underway to coordinate with other infrastructure works to minimise disruption during execution.
Once completed, the Ghodbunder Road expansion will not only improve daily commutes but also strengthen Thane’s position as a key connectivity hub within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
