The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has imposed a penalty of Rs 9.9 million on a contractor based in Hisar for delays in the special repair of nine major sector roads across the city. Officials stated that this is the second such penalty, with a previous fine exceeding Rs 10 million already levied against the same contractor for delays in repairing 13 other critical roads, including Major Sushil Aima Road in Palam Vihar and roads in Sector 9 and 9A.

A senior GMDA official confirmed that the authority took serious note of the delays and issued a formal penalty notice on 11 July. The contractor was originally awarded the repair work on 19 December 2024, with a stipulated completion date of 15 September 2025. However, progress has been far from satisfactory, the official said.

The repair work covered key master sector roads, including those dividing Sectors 30/31, 33/34, 57 (Part I and II), 49/50, 69/70, 70/75, 70/70A, 25/28, and 24/26. In its notice, the GMDA highlighted that the contractor failed to meet milestones agreed upon in the original contract, despite repeated reminders and follow-ups.

The delay has compounded public inconvenience, especially after recent rains severely damaged newly re-laid roads. “If timely repairs had been undertaken, the surface wouldn’t have folded or deteriorated to this extent,” the official added.

Residents have voiced frustration over the worsening condition of roads. Pankaj Yadav, a lawyer from Sector 22, said, “I had informed GMDA about the poor condition of Major Sushil Aima Road shortly after it was re-laid. The authority must act strictly in such cases.”

Large potholes and unsafe driving conditions continue to plague residents, intensifying demands for stricter accountability and faster completion of public infrastructure works.
