The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced that the first flyover of the Goregaon–Mulund Link Road (GMLR) project will be ready for use by May 2026.

The GMLR, one of Mumbai’s most ambitious infrastructure ventures, involves a 12.2-kilometre corridor comprising tunnels, flyovers, and interchanges, built at an estimated cost of Rs 140 billion. The project aims to provide a seamless connection between Mumbai’s western and eastern suburbs, drastically reducing travel time and congestion.

The first phase features a 1.2-kilometre flyover, beginning near Dindoshi Court and extending to the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP). The flyover will later connect to two six-kilometre tunnels that will pass under the park and emerge at Mulund.

Work on assembling the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) has already begun, with drilling scheduled to start early next year. The BMC confirmed that 31 pillars will support the structure, of which 27 have already been erected, while the remaining four are currently under construction.

An official said,

“The west-bound arm of the flyover will be completed by January 2026, and the east-bound arm by April 2026. Post-construction works will follow, and the flyover is expected to open for traffic by May 2026.”

The six-lane flyover will include an elevated circular intersection and pedestrian walkways on both sides, ensuring smoother traffic flow and improved safety.

Currently, travelling between Goregaon and Mulund during peak hours can take up to 90 minutes. Once the GMLR is fully operational, the journey time is expected to reduce to just 25 minutes.

While the flyover is slated for completion in 2026, the twin tunnels beneath SGNP are expected to be completed by 2028, with the entire corridor becoming fully operational by 2029.
